BlueFire Bar and Grill

Located inside the La Costa Resort and Spa, BlueFire Bar and Grill brings a refreshing burst of contemporary elegance to Carlsbad. Exotic dishes showcase the Chef’s talent for pairing flavors and textures, with diverse offerings ranging from Oven-Roasted Kobe Pork Loin Chop with Chipotle-Orange Glaze with baby bok choy and roasted fingerling potatoes to Pan Roasted Alaskan Halibut with chanterelle mushroom and sweet corn-spring onion ragout topped with chervil corn buerre-blanc.

BlueFire Bar and Grill

The BlueFire Bar and Grill, fashioned by San Francisco’s award-winning Puccini Restaurant Group, has recently become the centerpiece of the La Costa Resort and Spa’s new outdoor plaza. Here, guests can relax in a comfortable patio complete with fire pits and custom fountains, or retire to an adjoining indoor venue that features a warm ambient setting along with a hand blown glass flower fireplace wall, timber ceilings and an indoor fountain.

BlueFire offers décor that epitomizes the essence of contemporary elegance, as well as providing a complimentary alternative to La Costa Resort’s other paragon of fine dining, Legends California Bistro. Chef de Cuisine, Scott Diehl, is a seasoned professional that has created a fresh, masterful menu that is designed to cater to practically any taste preference imaginable.

On a recent visit, our cultured server, Marshall, suggested that we begin our meal with a few of their signature appetizers, each a marvel unto itself. The BlueFire Bruschetta was comprised of a warm duck leg confit, Port glazed onions with Cabrales Blue Cheese and a dried cherry mojo on ciabatta bread, which all combined to become a decidedly rich treat.

We also sampled the delicate Pan Seared Diver’s Scallops, which were tastefully presented on a bed of julienne heart of palm, aside a petit Chanterelle mushroom and microgreen salad and drizzled with a delightful touch of bittersweet orange sauce. But the most innovative presentation turned out to be the Sugar Cane Skewered Grilled Ahi Tuna with roasted apple barbeque sauce, which also came with a refreshing shaved fennel, Medjool date and sweet onion salad. The toothsome chunks of sushi quality tuna were fresh, tender and offset perfectly by the lightly piquant sauce.

Marshall saw to it that each dish was paired with a taste of an appropriate wine, which carried over beautifully to our soup and salad courses. My guest and I shared a thick, refreshing gazpacho that was replete with flavors of fresh vegetables and cucumbers, along with a salad featuring a Spiced White Port Poached Bartlett Pear with arugula, Belgian endive, blue cheese and spicy glazed pecans. They were both perfect precursors to the delicious entrées that we were served immediately thereafter.

My guest’s Herb Crusted Rack of Colorado Lamb with a ragout of roasted sweet peppers was served atop a crisp polenta cake with pesto and black olive jus, and was nothing less than a succulent masterpiece. My Red Wine Braised Boneless Prime Beef Short ribs with broccoli rabe and celery root-apple puree was absolutely fork-tender, and came in an incredibly savory demiglaze that was truly memorable.

Once again, Marshall came to the rescue with a suggestion that we try a rare Canadian ice wine with our desserts that is made exclusively from the Vidal grape, a fruit that is generally reserved for the making of Cognac. When teamed with our rich, flourless chocolate cake filled with mousse and a separate bowl of fresh strawberries sprinkled with imported balsamic vinegar, the wine provided an exceptional balance with undertones of apricots, peaches and honey.

By the time we took our leave and walked past the courtyard fountain, my guest and I had already concurred in our prediction that La Costa Resort and Spa now had yet another ‘Legend’ in the making.

I felt like I was on vacation

The atmosphere was very nice! The service and food were good! I will definitely be back. We sat outside on a warm summer night. very pleasant experience!

Correction on the review about waiting in the bar

I thought we were talking about the Firefly Bar and Grille in Encinitas. That was the wine dinner we went to that they asked us to pay for a half a glass of wine. Ha ! I have been to this restaurant twice. The food is average. However, because of all the tourists, you do feel like you are on vacation. I went with a table of 10 there, restaurant week. The waitress called my son honey and got several of the orders wrong. The time before that, the waiter I had was just a kid. They really need better 'help'.

      Food poisoning

My husband and I were so excited to attend the prefixe meal for our new years celebration, we didn't care about the pricey menu we just wanted to enjoy ourselves. We didn't. I began feeling very ill soon after desert, and so instead of staying for the entertainment we went home and I spent the night in cold sweats with my head over the toilet. My husband became ill several hours later the same evening. This sort of thing happens but what shocked me most was the reaction to our very polite letter. There was no applogy or offer of some sort of discount. Instead we received attitude and were basically told it was impossible and that without proof of a a doctor's note they didn't believe it and paid no further attention to us, even ignoring a secondary note. A kind appology would have sufficed. How was I going to get to the doctor on new years day when I couldn't walk away from the toilet for 2 minutes. We are sad this has happened as we frequent many restaraunts in a week and will never eat at Blue Fire Grill again due to the bad customer service and attitude, and we will make sure to tell all our neighbors in La Costa to do the same.

      What a nightmare !

We went to a wine dinner at this place. They had us in the bar, giving us a splash of wine or champagne. After the appetizers were passed, and they passed the same two over and over and over again, I asked if I could have another splash and was told NO, that I could buy a half a glass at the bar - this is after I had paid $75.00 for the wine dinner. The food is always mediocre at best. I will say that the abience is good, except for the back booths that make it feel like the old Bol Weivel. I have never had a good waitress or waiter there. And if something is not right, DO NOT COUNT ON them caring and trying to make it right. They just don't. I doubt very seriously if I will ever go back.
