Great experience at Chopahn
We chose Chopahn because it was one of the few "authentic" restaurants in San Diego's Gaslamp district. We were really pleased with our choice. We arrived around 6:00 and were the first people to be seated. The dining room is beautiful and spacious, and our server was gracious. It was my dinner companion's first visit to an Afghan restaurant, and the manager helped me walk through the menu. The mantu appetizer was the perfect amuse bouche: a teaser to prepare us for our kabobs, which were perfectly grilled. I love pumpkin, so I insisted that we have the kadu on the side. We really enjoyed our meal and appreciated the gracious, attentive (but not intrusive) service. I hope that more San Diegans (and visitors) discover Chopahn.
Aromatic spices and delicate flavors at Chopahn
Chopahn Authentic Afghan Cuisine Restaurant has the best Afghan food in San Diego! I frequent this restaurant often with friends and family and have told many people about this award-winning restaurant. We enjoy the classy ambience, exceptional, attentive service, and mouth-watering entrees. My personal favorite dish is the Sautéed Saffron Shrimp. What a flavor! Another favorite on the menu is the Shinwari Kabob which is a rack of lamb with a pistachio crust served with grilled vegetables and roasted garlic sauce. They also have an array of vegetarian dishes. A 'must try' is the Challaw Kadu. This dish is sautéed pumpkin topped with yogurt and served with seasoned basmati rice. Chopahn Restaurant is outstanding and deserves to continue to be recognized as the best Afghan restaurant in San Diego!
Poor EVERYTHING
A friend and I decided to dine here on behalf of a recommendation through an entertainments guide. Upon arriving, I will say that the service was pleasant and prompt, but that goes without saying considering we were the only table in the restaurant for 2 hours. Once being seated, we noticed there were gnats everywhere, the white wine was left on the table to warm itself, and the food was nothing exciting. The server again was pleasant, but unfortunately the manager here threw quite the fit when he decided to not honor our entertainment guide coupon. EVEN THOUGH we had the ad in our hands. All in all, the food was bland, overpriced, and the experience is one that I would not recommend. Gaslamp has plenty of other amazing options!
