WOnderful laid back atmosphere
I usually don't like being surrounded by people in a restaurant. I like my privacy. And even though the people in Del Mar and even at Jake's can be a bit stuffy, I didn't mind the closeness at Jake's. It was a very comfortable laid-back setting, and beautiful. I've been a couple of times, once was for my anniversary. We had a window seat set right up at the beach. It was beautiful. I've had friends who've gone when the tide was very high and had waves crashing at the window. How exciting would that be? I thought the food was very good. Some things were left to be improved, but not by much. Most everything my husband and I have had there were excellent. I would definitely go again, both for the food and atmosphere.
Jakes Birthday Dinner
My wife planned a surprise birthday party for me and everything was great.
The food, service and ambience was perfect.
We had moved away from San Diego a few years ago and I always talked about missing the food and view at Jake's. It was like old times being back at the restaurant. I can't wait to return.
Great dining experience
I thought this was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had! The food was wonderful and the view was spectacular. Even more though, the staff made us feel like we were celebrities! Our waiter was close to perfect. We asked many questions which he was more than able to answer and we went with his recommendations and loved every one! Even when we got up to use the restroom, it seemed like every employee greeted us on the way or asked us if our meal was going alright! I cant wait to bring visitors here!
Great place to be....
This place is another great place to watch the waves crash against the beaches of Del Mar. They even have lights on the water for you late comers. Take a walk on the beach after dinner to tell your loved you how much you love their company.
Excellent view
Best seats as far as view is along the glass windows, however, it's much more comfortable in the cushy sofa-like seats in the tables in the main area.
Excellent seafood dishes. Price reflects the nice views you get. Take a walk on the beach afterwards to work off the dessert!
When it's good, it's very good
I've been going to Jakes for over 15 years now and while there have been some things from the past that I wished they'd bring back, it has consistently been a nice place to take out-of-town guests to help them understand why we love to live here. The waves of the ocean breaking just a few feet away and delicious dishes like the Seafood Pasta Provencale and yummy desserts all keep me coming back year after year. It's always fun watching the valets maneuver your car into seemingly impossible contortions to make them all fit in the front! Definitely make your reservations although they do keep a portion of the restaurant available for walk-ins.
Non-alcholoic drinks a real weakness
We went for lunch. The view of the sea was nice, the service was friendly.
The food was ok, but the iced tea was terrible. It tasted like it had come from a powder.
I refuse to go back to places that charge for soda refills.
Though we might otherwise go back, we won't for this one reason.
You have to go
Jake's had the best food, it was pricey but it was way worth it. I would definitely go there again and I recomend it highly.
Almost Perfect
The view of the ocean was wonderful. The Tournados was probably the best beef dish I've ever had. At $27 I'm not going to pop in on a regular basis but for special occasions I would come back and order the same thing. The hazelnut salad was equally magnificent but it seemed a bit greedy to charge an extra $7 for it. Most restaurants give a salad with the dinner. It also seemed chinsey to charge for refills of soft drinks. My goodness, every restaurant in the western hemisphere gives free refills. The service was good but we never had that sense of being our server's only customer which is the illusion that the great servers strive for. Still, the food and atmosphere more than made up for the slight inadequacies.
Don't go here for privacy
We went here for our anniversary. We have never been here before. We thought we would be seated at a private booth for privacy. We had reservations a week in advance. We are used to fine dining and thought this might be a good place to celebrate our anniversary. Wrong!!!!!! It was a Saturday night and we felt like we were just part of the regular bar scene. Even after being seated, it was crowded and noisy and we had NO privacy whatsoever. Great place to go if you don't care about being around a thousand other people and maybe intrested in meeting a few snobby people. Ruined our night because we thought it was going to be a intimate dining experince. Don't go here for any special occasion unless you want to meet a low life del martian.
