A solid choice
Though my boyfriend and I both had food that's often hard to mess up, it was very delicious. He had a burger that was acclaimed as one of the best he's had in his life and my nachos perfectly hit the spot. The atmosphere isn't as exciting as some breweries often are, the nightlife at others can be awesome, but it was a really nice casual dinner. We went to the one in downtown La Jolla, which could have had something to do with the lack of a bustling young hip crowd. Overall, it was a most enjoyable experience. I would definitely go back without resistance.
Best kept secret: Karl Strauss Brewery Gardens
This jewel is set in the middle of a large, lovely Japanese garden. You can eat indoors or out by the koi pond, and stroll the gravel paths afterward to enjoy the garden. The beer is great, of course, since they brew it themselves, but they also have a decent wine list and a full bar. The menu is constantly updated with a fresh California viewpoint. On Sundays there is a good buffet brunch, with a glass of champagne or beer included. The restaurant is closed to the public on Saturdays, since Saturdays are dedicated to weddings and other special events.
Excellent food and beer
Karl Strauss is a great restaurant, even if you don't like beer. I typically don't but I like their Oatmeal Stout. The food is pretty good as is the service and atmosphere. The Sorrento Valley location is the prettiest.
great menu selection
We stopped in for appetizers before dinner and found an extensive menu selection. The appetizers were enough for a meal. Prices were moderate and service was good. The atmosphere is casual.
More beer please!
The Dining at Karls was fairly good. Extensive selection, great appetizer options. The cuts of steak offered weren't my favorites and the dining area was chilly. The good brew warmed me up though!
relaxed
I went a while ago, but recall enjoying it, and would go again. we sat in a comfy, private booth, had a beer sampler..but I cant recall what we ate. I will go again, and report back.
