Scalini

Sing a Song for Scalini

'...Where the turf meets the surf in Del Mar.' As the old song goes, this area has become well known for its celebrated racetrack as well as the upscale lifestyles that abound in adjacent communities. With so much coastal development taking place it's comforting to know that, less than two miles east of Interstate 5, there still exists a glimpse of the blissful way of life that originally made Del Mar famous.

Perched regally on the uppermost floor of the Mercado just across the road from the polo fields, Scalini enjoys a commanding view of the horses and riders who engage in this spirited sport. It is a restaurant perfectly situated for those who are looking for a picturesque, elegant dining experience, but don't want to have to drive a long way to find it.

Proprietor Garo Minassian has gone out of his way to assure that guests will enjoy every aspect of their visit. From the tasteful, Mediterranean decor and attentive wait staff to the consistently fine cuisine and fashionable cocktail lounge that adjoins the dining room; everything here is top of the line. Garo has also included a few of his grandmother's secret family recipes to further enhance the menu.

Executive Chef Brant Beauchamp is a culinary master with a fine sense of preparation, presentation and theme. On the night of our visit, he created a bevy of dishes to delight our palates. Each of which creatively utilized only seasonally available ingredients that had reached their peak of quality and freshness.

Our accomplished waiter and Staff Supervisor Robert Snell first arrived at our table with a platter of Scalini's signature, family-recipe focaccia bread. It was thin, crisp, and tasty, with just the right touch of herbs, and was garnished with fresh spinach. It was the ideal compliment to our delightfully exotic Wild Mushroom Bisque, which used both Porcini and rare Japanese mushrooms to create a creamy and richly flavorful soup that was one of the best of its kind that I have ever tasted.

Robert then brought our salad, which was pleasingly fresh and adorned with roasted baby beets and a zesty, Humboldt Fog goat cheese. Tangy vinaigrette added the perfect foil to the carefully selected array of crisp micro greens.

Next came a pasta course, in which perfectly al dente fettuccini with fresh red bell peppers and basil was topped by succulent shrimp in a light saffron sauce. The tantalizing bouquet of this dish was only improved upon by its sublime flavor.

My guest and I were entranced by our entrees. The Pan Seared Northern Halibut with Manila clams and cherry tomatoes in a saffron shellfish emulsion was fork tender, delicate, and bursting with flavor. My generously portioned, dynamically prepared tenderloin of veal in brown sage butter was a true marvel, and was served along with jumbo Porcini mushrooms and a wild mushroom risotto. Both of these dishes were true works of art, and left us thoroughly satisfied.

It was only through the deft persuasion of our waiter, Robert, that we finally gave in and tried a couple of selections from the dessert tray. The Assorted Berry Tart was light and fruity, with a clean finish, but the real showstopper was Grandmother's Bread Pudding, which is prepared from an old family recipe. Served a la flambe, its thick richness simply melts in your mouth. It comes as no surprise that this is the most popular dessert on the menu.

When we left our table, there was a full house in the lounge as popular song stylist, Jon Sandoval, captivated the crowd while continuing his long run as Scalini's featured entertainer. Great food, great sounds and great service. If Bing Crosby were still around, he might even write a song about this place.

Perfecto!

It was like something out of a movie. The food, atmosphere and service were great. Overlooking the polo grounds on a September night provided for a perfect evening. Highly recommended!

My favorite!

This is my favorite upscale restaurant in San Diego. I go there each year for my birthday and the food and service is divine. Definitely meditteranean inspired cuisine-everything I've had there has been terrific. It's a bit pricey for an everyday restaurant (we usually drop about $150-$200 for 2 people), but a perfect spot for a special occassion.

Average

The food was good, but the service left something to be desired. I was there on a Sunday night and the place, unsurprisingly was not crowded. It therefore was puzzling that the service would be so slow and confusing. It took probably 15 minutes for us to get menus. The restaurant itself is beautiful with a great view. I will most likely be back. I am hoping the service was a fluke.

Boo...

Staff was friendly and cordial *when* we saw our waiter. Food was luke-warm and very sub-par. Had the Halibut w/crab and it tasted like canned fish that was after being presented with dish that looked like it was waiting for a while to get to our table. No bus service to speak of, took 45 mins to be asked if we wanted water and our dirty appetizer plates shared the table with us till the end of the meal. Like I said, very nice people but I see why I was told to just walk in for a table on a Saturday night. Would definitely not recommend this restaurant and instead goto Olive Garden or something and save $100

Hair anyone?

The food was ok, except for the hair I found in my linguini. The service was poor.

Shocked at the poor quality of Food

My husband and I tried this place twice before we decided that we will not be back, ever. The first time we simply thought it was a fluke that the food was poor. The Host hinted to my husband that they have a special "Reserve" Steak that is supurb...well, it turned out as an average steak medium-cooked when asked for "rare", besides that it was at an exhorbitant price, my lamb was just "ok", nothing special about it. The second time we went, we opted for the restaurant week menu (since nothing else looked good or we had tried it the first time), sorry we even ordered. It was very simple home-style cooking of chicken, salmon dishes that actually would taste better at home. The chicken AND salmon were very dry, without any creativity, or taste. Outside of the ambience, the food, staff and prices are not want you want.

Bad Service, arrogant server, terrible food

We have been residents of Rancho Santa Fe over the last 10 years. Last night was our first visit to Scalini. The matre'd was arrogant and pompous. The waiter, when rattled off the special of the night, looked at my wife and I and said "I know you two don't know what osso bucco" is. He further insulted my wife when he skipped over her by taking order from other men at our table first. The final straw was how chewy my veal marsala was and how lumpy the sauce is. I now remember why friends and neighbors from RSF have told kept me from visiting this terrible establishment these past years. Don't waste your money at this place.

NO SERVICE

While the food was good, the service was terrible. We were completely ignored by the wait staff. At one point we wondered if we should get up and leave. After our plate we cleared we had to wait (after we finally had to ask) over a half hour for dessert or coffee. We weren't even offered and were rushed through it so the wait staff could wait on someone else who had arrived an hour after us and was already being treated to the FULL description of the desserts. The experience was offensive.

A ruined mother's day experience

My mother in law and I were being treated to a special mother's day night out. In turned into the worst dining experience we have had since I can remember. Aside from the time I spent with my family, the whole dinner was a nightmare. The wait staff never bothered to attend to any of our needs during dinner and left us waiting continuosly throughout the meal. At one point the staff was so rude as to take items off our table that were being used to give to other diners!! I was appalled!!! I will never eat at this restaurant again and warn everyone, if you are not a regular at this establishment prepared to be completely ignored.

Terrible

I will never go back
