Tomiko

Overlooking beautiful Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Tomiko offers a well–rounded and approachable menu of traditional Japanese and contemporary Asian cuisine. While Tomiko’s sushi is the featured attraction, the chefs work hard to please all guests, with items like lamb chops and filet mignon on the menu. The sushi bar and lounge provide a casually-elegant setting that is a destination in itself. The full service bar mixes up playful signature drinks like the Moonlight Cooler, and serves from a rich selection of sakes, wines, and beers. The restaurant focuses on healthy and environmentally conscious foods, utilizing sustainable fish, gluten-free products, and using only the freshest ingredients .

Great North County spot!

What a cool night spot with a killer view. I've never had sushi taste so fresh, hung out in the bar w/ live music.

It's all about service!

Tomiko's staff super friendly and nice. Sushi was great, and atmosphere is very romantic.

Great

Went there with three friends and really enjoyed my time. Tons of seating and super comfy. Didnt feel like a typically sushi restaurant. The rolls are creative and the portions are perfect. The cob is killer! Got a great menu that is unique. Highly recommend and soon there will be happy hour specials. Oh and forgot the Staffing is amazing...Overly nice!

A Local's Spot

I can't believe I lived in Encinitas for 7 years and just found this place. It's the best place besides the beach to catch a view of the sunset. We went for happy hour twice last week when everything was an amazing pink and orange. We sat in the bar the first time and just chilled there listening to the music and watching baseball. We liked the food so much we went back and sat at the sushi bar which also had a view, but we also met the young Japanese chefs Matsu and Nanami...wow those two can really come up with some tasty rolls...I don't remember hte names of the rolls, but I can't forget the amazing taste and textures. They really know what they are doing...I even had the Aji sashimi that my boyfriend finally got me to try...yummy! Overall though I just loved the atmosphere...I didn't know about it, but apparently everyone else does since I ran into 3 friends when we went went on a friday...the place was happening. I recommend for fun the bar or sushi bar. But for those more intimate moments definitely ask for a table looking out at the beach!

Delicious and great views.

Took my wife to Tomikos for her birthday and she loved it. Great panoramic views, and almost had the whole place to ourselves on a Mon. Great food, with some nice twists. Would dine again no doubt.

new find

Got back from a business trip from Japan--missing the food there and a Japanese friend recommended Tomiko. The place was a little intimidating with the views and interior architecture at first, but the atomosphere was lively, fun, and super relaxed. It had a nice local feel to it with everyone knowing each other. While I stuck with ordering the traditional sushi and a few japanese appetizers, my friends ordered the Ahi dinner and bento box...we were quite impressed with our meals. I've been back a few times now with business partners and looking forward to bringing a date next weekend to the bar. This was a definite good find in my own backyard!

Not good

I don't know how all the other reviews for this place are so positive. We sat near a window - the view was ok, but it was too cold to be comfortable. The waiter informed us the window was broken and couldn't be shut all the way. My halibut sushi was far from fresh, with a beige tinge that gave away it's age. Hamachi was not much better, though I did enjoy the poke salad. However, the real kicker was a LIVE, wriggling roundworm sitting on TOP of one of my pieces of sushi! I was informed by the chef that 'this sort of thing is normal'! Needless to say I lost my appetite for uncooked fish, and ordered some overcooked bland calamari. As a generous gesture, Tomiko did offer a free desert, but when I ordered green tea ice cream, they didn't have it, and I left in disgust. What a disappointment.

HORRIBLE! DISGUSTING! RIP OFF!

My boyfriend and I scheduled a Valentine's day reservation at Tomiko. I was surprised that they had a table available the day before V-day itself. Now I know why. The windows while overlooking moonlight beach, are dirty. We should have known then. We ordered from the dinner menu. Filet Mignon and Lobster. Over 30 dollars a plate with the wine pairing. It sounded delicious. He ordered his well done while I opted for medium rare. After some decent yet spicy and undercooked Calimari starter, one very long wait later, our dinner arrived. His Filet was bloody rare as was mine. The "lobster" seemed to be an authentic lobster tail stuffed with the kind of imitation lobster one finds at, oh, I don't know a Rubio's fast food fish taco joint. The imitation lobster was smothered in some kind of mayo sauce and was certainly not the "lobster tail" described in the menu. The filet was so bloody it was hard to choke down as at this point it was barely luke warm. We sent his back since he is opposed to eating meat so rare, and it came back seconds later, seemingly microwaved AND STILL RARE!!!! GROSS!! The wine pairing tasted like Sutter Home or Ernest and Gallo. CHEAP WINE!!!! BAD FOOD!!! Rubbery Veggies!!! DIRTY WINDOWS!!!!! WASTE OF MONEY!!! One hundred ++++ dollars later our Valentines day dinner was a joke!!!! My boyfriend went to Wendy's across the street. Maybe the Sushi is good, but from what we saw tonight, we will NEVER GO TO TOMIKOS again. WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!
